FAQ - Frequently asked questions about the fire bowl with grill from Remundi

Here you will find answers to the most frequently asked questions about our fire plate.

Why buy a fire bowl with grill plate from Remundi?

In this section, we present the special features of the Remundi fire pit and the reasons why our customers love our grills.

Slowing down and socializing in everyday life

Socializing around the fire, relaxing barbecuing with wood or charcoal/handling fire, crafts

Together in the moment

  • The communal barbecue at Remundi invites you to leave the stress of everyday life behind and enjoy the beauty of the moment. Lively conversation and preparing the food for the grill make summer days and even winter barbecues more relaxing.

Playing with fire

  • Barbecuing becomes an event. Everyone stands in a circle, feeling the warmth and barbecuing together. Unlike with a gas grill, monitoring and controlling the fire is also a challenging task with a fire bowl with grill.

Culinary freedom: From smashed burgers to dessert

Forget the limitations of traditional grills. With the Remundi fire plate, you can let your creativity run wild. The closed steel surface makes anything possible: from juicy salmon on the skin to pancakes for breakfast to caramelized pineapple for dessert.

Particularly popular

  • The Smashed Burger: Press the ground beef directly onto the hot steel. This creates a continuous crust (roasted flavors) that would be impossible on a grill rack—and without any fat fires.

Expand your horizons with modular accessories

  • Branding: Use the grill grate insert (or topper) to give the steak the classic pattern.
  • Asian: Place the wok attachment in the center for curries and stir-fries.
  • Aroma: The Smoke Tube enhances your grilled food with a delicate smoky flavor.

The features of the Remundi Plancha grill plate

The special design, material, and treatment of the grill plate are crucial factors here.

Curvature

  • The plate was pressed in such a way that it curves inward when heated. This allows oil and grease to drain off in a controlled manner and prevents them from dirtying the floor.

Patina

  • We do not use artificial coatings such as Teflon. Frequent use of the grill causes fat/oil to burn in, creating a protective layer known as patina. This protects against rust and prevents food from sticking to the plate.

Material

  • Robust, untreated steel was used for the fire plate. All products have been tested for food safety by QIMA (Hermes Hamburg).

Fire pit for the garden & art object at the same time

A Remundi is more than just a fire bowl with a grill. It is an architectural statement against the throwaway society. We combine function and aesthetics to create a focal point that looks good even without food on the grill.

One of a kind

  • Each fire pit is handmade, undergoes a natural aging process, and is completed after a 4-week production period. The result is an elegant, unique rust look (Corten look) that makes each piece a distinctive one-of-a-kind item.

Atmosphere

  • After barbecuing, the Remundi provides warmth and light until late into the night as an open fire pit. This allows you to enjoy summer and winter nights with your loved ones in comfort.

The heat zones: indirect & direct grilling

The special design of the Remundi creates different temperature zones, allowing you to grill different dishes at the same time.

Direct heat (up to 400 °C)

  • The direct heat occurs in the center of the plancha plate and is mainly used for fast and powerful grilling, which is the case with meat and the creation of roasted flavors. The topper attachment can be used to give the meat a juicy branding.

Indirect heat

  • On the outside, the plate becomes a resting zone. Here, the vegetables gently cook in their own juices, the fish becomes translucent, or the grilled meat is allowed to rest so that the juices can distribute.

Information & care

Our grill plate and grill modules are made of robust, untreated steel.

In a complex manufacturing process, the grill plate is pressed into a shape that is slightly inclined inwards so that the oil/fat runs towards the center. It is then rubbed with glue oil and wrapped in food-safe coconut paper and VCI film. This preserves the grill plate until you unpack it.

The grill plate, grill modules, and grill grates have been tested for food safety by QIMA (formerly Hermes Hamburg).

That depends entirely on your own preferences.

A thicker fire plate measuring 8-10 cm stores heat longer in the steel and ensures long-lasting grilling pleasure, but takes longer to heat up – ideal for longer moments and events.

A thinner plate (4-6 cm) reaches operating temperature faster, but also loses heat more quickly. This is better suited for spontaneous barbecues.

Only wood from deciduous trees should be used as fuel, as burning coniferous wood releases tannins that are harmful to health. Beech or birch wood is particularly suitable.

The wood used as fuel must be dry and well seasoned.

IMPORTANT: Please do not use chemical ignition aids or paper to light the fire. Instead, use compressed wood with oil or wax, brushwood or wood shavings.

Our fire plate can reach temperatures (depending on the firing) of between 120 and 400 degrees Celsius, depending on the position on the fire plate. The inner areas of the fire plate, which are closest to the flames, become the hottest, while the outer areas remain cooler.

Of course, this always depends somewhat on the size, diameter, and thickness of the grill plate and the amount of firewood. As a rule, it takes approx. 15-20 minutes for Remundi Basic grills and 20 to 30 minutes for the Pro series in summer. In fall/winter, it can take approx. 30 to 40 minutes for the grill plate to heat up completely and be ready for grilling.

Use cooking oils that can withstand high temperatures, such as sunflower oil, rapeseed oil, coconut oil, or avocado oil, for your Remundi plancha plate.

If you use your barbecue frequently and clean it properly, a protective layer (patina) will form on the grill plate or grill modules due to the burning-in of oil/grease. If you do not use your Remundi fireplace for a longer period of time, we recommend that you carry out regular visual inspections to check whether the grill plate/grill modules are sufficiently oiled to prevent rust from forming.

What you need:

  • Heat-resistant vegetable oil
(e.g. linseed oil, rapeseed oil, sunflower oil)
  • Kitchen paper or a clean cloth
  • Barbecue gloves
  • Grill tongs or grill tweezers
  • Gas burner, wood or charcoal as a heat source
  • Optional: sanding fleece or grill scraper (to remove loose patina residue or rust)

1. cleaning the fire plate or grill modules

  • Remove all loose patina residue, grease, food residue and any rust spots.
  • For heavy residues: Use sanding fleece or fine sandpaper.
  • Then wipe thoroughly with a dry cloth.

2. heat the plate

  • Heat the hotplate evenly with a wood or gas burner.
  • Aim: The entire surface should be really hot (approx. 200-250 °C or more). The heat helps to burn in the oil better.

3. apply the first coat of oil

  • Once the plate or module is hot, apply a thin layer of oil to the surface.
  • Spread the oil evenly with a heat-resistant cloth or kitchen paper (e.g. with barbecue tongs).
CAUTION: The panel or module is hot! Risk of burns!
    Important:
Only apply a very thin layer – too much oil forms sticky residues.

4. baking

  • Leave the plate or module on a high heat for about 15-20 minutes until the oil is burnt in and the surface darkens.
  • Smoke and odors may occur – this is normal.

5. additional layers (optional, but recommended)

  • Repeat the process 2-3 times: apply a little oil each time, spread and allow to burn in.
  • This creates a stable, dark patina with a non-stick effect.

6. allow to cool and care for

  • Allow to cool after the final baking.
  • Lightly oil before storing to prevent rust.

Tip for care after every barbecue:

  • Remove coarse residues with a spatula.
  • Wipe dry with kitchen paper.
  • Rub thinly with oil while the plate is still warm.

The patina on the hotplate (steel grill plates) or on the grill modules is a protective and non-stick layer that forms as a result of oil burning in. If this patina comes off over time, this can have the following causes:

1. uneven heat distribution:
If the fire plate or the grill modules are heated unevenly, the patina may burn in the areas that are too hot or not harden properly in the areas that are too cool. The greatest heat is often generated in the center above the flame, which can cause the patina to crack or peel off.

2. use of aggressive cleaning agents or water:
If the fire plate or the grill modules are cleaned with detergent or water, this can damage or completely remove the patina. Rinsing with water after grilling or rain can also cause damage if the patina is not properly burnt in.

3. mechanical stress (e.g. with metal spatula):
If sharp or hard tools are used, the patina can be removed mechanically.

4. lack of or incorrect burn-in:
If the hotplate or the grill modules are not correctly burnt in before first use (e.g. too little oil, burn-in time too short, incorrect oil), the patina cannot bond permanently with the steel.

5. too little care after use:
The patina must be maintained after each use – usually by lightly re-oiling. Without regular care, it dries out and flakes off over time.

6. weather influences (rust formation):
If the fire plate or the grill modules are exposed to rain or moisture, rust can form – this lifts the patina and causes it to flake off.

What can you do about it?

  • If necessary, clean the affected area with a spatula or abrasive fleece, treat again with heat-resistant oil (e.g. linseed oil or rapeseed oil) and re-bake at high heat.
  • Clean after each use (without water) and oil lightly.
  • Protect from rain or store with a cover.
IMPORTANT: Moisture can also form under a cover plate or tarpaulin. Therefore, check regularly by visual inspection whether the fire plate or the grill module is rusting.

The high temperatures during the grilling process cause the grill plate to bulge slightly inwards. Ideally, the oil/grease should run towards the opening in the middle and not outwards.

In very few individual cases, however, the grill plate may bulge outwards instead. If you notice that this is the case, you can proceed as follows:

  • The grill plate comes with two threaded holes on the outside and three on the inside of the plate; the bolts and screws are already pre-assembled on the underside of the plate
  • Remove the two bolts (on the outside of the grill plate) and the three washers (on the inside)
  • Turn the entire grill plate over
  • Refit the bolts and screws in the corresponding positions

The grill plate is ready for use again and now curves inwards.

Yes, our Remundi fireplaces can be placed outdoors without any problems. However, standing moisture should be removed promptly as rust can form.

Make sure that the grill tray is free of leaves or similar when you put the grill back into operation.

We recommend wrapping either the grill plate or grill tray with our cover plates or alternatively the entire grill with our cover tarpaulins if it will not be used for a longer period of time.

IMPORTANT: Moisture can also form under a cover plate or tarpaulin. Therefore, check regularly by visual inspection whether the fire plate or the grill module is rusting.

It is best to let the fire burn itself out. If you need to do it quickly, you can smother the fire with sand or a fire blanket.

The grill plate has cooler temperature zones on the outside and gets hotter on the inside. This makes it possible to prepare a variety of dishes that need to be grilled at different temperatures. However, you can also keep dishes that are ready earlier warm on the outer plate.

To adjust the temperature zones, you can move the charcoal inside the tray – e.g. to the side to increase the temperature on the outer ring.

To remove ash, you should first wait until the ash has cooled down completely. You can then push it through the bowl opening with a suitable shovel or a small sweeper and empty it using an ash bin or ash drawer (depending on the model).

To remove grease stains from rusted steel, you can use a mixture of washing-up liquid, lemon juice or vinegar. These household remedies help to dissolve grease and reduce rust stains. Alternatively, a grease remover can also be used. Clean the area with a cloth/fleece and dry.

Some of our fireplaces can be fitted with wheels (available separately). This makes the fireplaces easy to move.

The fireplaces mentioned include: Vulcano, Zelos and Carus.

Attention: The fireplace must not be moved when in use, but only when completely cooled down!
